The Foundation recently completed a Learn To Swim programme at the William Lloyd Primary School in Paarl. 400 children between the ages of seven and 10, participated in over 4 000 lessons aimed at teaching them basic water safety and how to swim. The results were phenomenal with many children now being able to swim 25m of the pool without any aid.
The Berg River, which flows through Paarl is notoriously dangerous and the Learn To Swim programme will go a long way in teaching South Africans how to stay safe along the river.
William Lloyd Primary School Principal, Pieter Lourens was so impressed with the results of the programme that he invited PCMFSA to continue the project at the school and include all learners.
What makes this initiative even more special is that local swimming coaches were used, resulting in job creation for the local community.
