Our Mission

OUR MISSION

Launched on 14th December 2012, the primary objective of The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation is to save lives by putting an end to drowning.
The Foundation’s mission is threefold:

WORK OF THE FOUNDATION

The Foundation’s work is critically important because the World Health Organization estimated that 360,000 people drowned worldwide in 2015 – more than 40 deaths every hour. This is made all the more tragic because drowning fatalities are preventable if people are educated about water safety and given basic training in how to swim and first aid.

The Foundation focuses on children and youth because they are particularly vulnerable: more than half the victims in 2015 were under the age of 25 and children under the age of 5 are the most affected. Additionally, even when a drowning is non-fatal, the victim can be left with severe after-effects, such as neurological deficits. Thus, working to prevent drowning incidents has a positive effect on the health and well-being of children and adults across the world.

Through the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation’s tireless work, a number of “Learn to Swim” and “Water Safety” programmes have been implemented around the world in order to fight against this scourge.

The Foundation is equally involved in communicating the empowering values of sport to children. This focus on discipline, respect for oneself and for others, determination and teamwork helps youth to develop interpersonal skills for a healthier and happier life. The “Sport & Education” component of the Foundation uses sport as a tool to give children a chance at a brighter future.
